A look into the smart future of meat and protein processing

Shortage of skilled workers, product diversity and consumer behavior that is difficult to assess – the meat and protein industry is facing major challenges. It is therefore all the more important to design the process chain efficiently and economically, in line with the special requirements that the product places on hygiene and quality. Digitization and automation of processes offer possible solutions. Innovative technologies such as AI, robotics and cloud computing open up new opportunities in industrial production.

Food safety at Anuga FoodTec

How can the safety of food be guaranteed in the context of international chain stores and the at the same time growing need for transparency regarding the origin and processing? This question is one of the key themes at this year’s Anuga FoodTec. To minimise the consumer protection risks and guarantee the authenticity of the foodstuffs, the international supplier fair for the food and beverage industry provides information on the latest technologies and services. The agenda focuses on trends and the residue analytics process as well as on current approaches for the prevention of food fraud. Experts estimate that around ten percent of the food and raw materials traded worldwide are affected by food fraud. The most frequently counterfeited foodstuffs are olive oil, honey, milk, fish as well as adulterated spice and nut mixtures.

Sustainability in the meat industry: a top theme at IFFA 2022

Sustainability is a catalyst for change and innovation in the meat industry. Political requirements and nutrition-conscious consumers are driving producers and manufacturers to act. Additional pressure is being generated by the global debate on climate protection and resource conservation. The meat processing industry is responding to this with technological innovations, but also with fundamental corporate commitments to sustainable solutions.

Tiny package, greater depth

Researchers at Fraunhofer IZM have joined forces with TecVenture, Optrontec Inc., and KAIST to create a high-speed camera fitted with a unique multi-lens array that can capture images with a far greater depth of field than its conventional counterparts. The miniaturized electronics make the system a good choice for efficient damage analytics in industrial use or for many research activities. To prepare the camera for reliable work in the tough reality of industrial environments without compromising its compact size, the electronics for the system were miniaturized by Fraunhofer IZM using the Institute’s embedding technology.

Miniaturized and networked active implants

Implants can actively support the body, as in the case of pacemakers, neuro-prostheses or cochlear implants. In the future, active implants will be smaller, less energy-intensive and, above all, more patient-friendly. This is why the Fraunhofer Institute for Biomedical Engineering IBMT is working on miniaturization, external power supplies and wirelessly networked implants. The latest developments will be presented at COMPAMED/MEDICA in Düsseldorf from November 15 to 18 (Hall 13, Stand D60).

37th International A+A Congress 2021

Occupational safety and health specialists will come together at the 37th International A+A. Expert know-how will be presented and extensively discussed in around 25 series of on-site events, some of which will also be streamed online. ‘The situation with Corona and current entry regulations unfortunately makes it necessary for us to focus on essential topics this time. This also means we can offer all our speakers and visitors the highest possible level of safety on site’, said Dr Christian Felten, Managing Director of Basi (Federal Association for Occupational Safety and Health). As the organiser of the A+A Congress, Basi works closely with Messe Düsseldorf. Congress tickets are available for 99 euros in the A+A ticket shop (aplusa.de), the world’s leading international trade fair for safety and health at work. In addition, all interested parties can participate in a selection of congress events online. As an additional bonus in 2022, Basi, together with the Trade Fair, will offer in-depth, future-oriented online sessions on important A+A topics in 2022/2023. Dates and content will be announced well in advance.

Bioeconomy

Carbon dioxide is one of the main drivers of climate change – which means that we need to reduce CO2 emissions in the future. Fraunhofer researchers are highlighting a possible way to lower these emissions: They use the greenhouse gas as a raw material, for instance to produce plastics. To do this, they first produce methanol and formic acid from CO2, which they convert via microorganisms into building blocks for polymers and the like.
