The planned areas are already fully booked three months before the start of the trade fair - the demand is much higher vis-a-vis the comparable period of the previous event. "This strong demand is impressive confirmation of the importance of südback for the bakery industry, states Andreas Wiesinger, Member of the Board of Management of Messe Stuttgart. "The planned exhibition areas are already booked out three months before the start of the trade fair and the final stands are being allocated. Now we are considering how we can integrate unplanned areas into the event in order to offer stands to companies who are still on the waiting list."
Messe Stuttgart and its partners are looking forward with optimism to südback 2016, which is the biggest event this year for the bakery industry in the German-speaking world. 650 exhibiting companies are expected in Stuttgart – over 100 of which come from other European countries, which is a new record. Records are also being chased in terms of visitor numbers. Messe Stuttgart expects that the record from 2014, when over 33,000 professional visitors were at südback, will be exceeded this year. "Based on the joyful anticipation and positive signals from the industry we are expecting a very successful event" delights Andreas Wiesinger.
Difficult market environment
Despite the falling number of operating companies in the bakery and confectionery trades, südback manages to not only grow steadily – the catchment area of the event is also getting bigger. In terms of exhibitors, Messe Stuttgart can see a clear increase in the number of exhibitors from other German-speaking countries, mainly from Austria. And Messe Stuttgart and its partners are also expecting significant increases in the number of visitors from the Germany, Austria and Switzerland region. On a national level primarily from northern Germany, on an international level mainly from Austria, where the only trade fair for the industry in the neighbouring country was cancelled. Also Germany's reputation as a bread paradise makes südback interesting for international market players. In 2016 just under 20 percent of the exhibiting companies will come from other European countries to Stuttgart and meet decision-makers from home and abroad here.
Accompanying programme, awards and prizes
Since 1978 südback has been presenting its diverse offering to visitors from the German-speaking world and neighbouring European countries. The industry developments from the areas working and operating technology, shop fixtures and fittings, raw materials and semi-finished products, merchandise, sales promotion and services are reflected at the exhibition stands. Important trends such as the eating-out market and catering are also present among the companies.
Bakers' Trend Forum
In addition to the new products from the exhibitors, the opportunities to engage in professional dialogue and exchange information and ideas with colleagues are also key reasons why the event is a must-attend fixture in the industry calendar. Information on training and opportunities for continuous professional development are also available in the forums of the bakery and confectionery guilds. In the Bakers' Trend Forum (L-Bank Forum, Hall 1) the State Association of Guilds of Württemberg Bakers presents a varied programme in two bakeries and a café bar – from training and advanced studies in the industry, to new products for production and sales, through to live demonstrations, as well as presentations. In the Confectioners' Trend Forum (Hall 7) of the State Association of Guilds of Baden-Württemberg Confectioners, industry developments are also visible and trends are presented. Here world champion confectioners provide live demonstrations of their work and experts present trends for the upcoming Christmas trade.
südback Trend Award
The presentation of the renowned awards and industry prizes are other traditional elements in the event concept of südback. The südback Trend Award is presented in the Bakers' Trend Forum, on Saturday at 15.00, and takes place this year for the 10th time. The award represents forward-looking developments, technical innovations and fresh ideas for the success of companies and for the first time is being awarded in three categories: Marketing and sales, Raw materials, as well as Working and operating technology. The announcement of the winners at an earlier stage is also new. This allows the winners to use the award in their communication ahead of their participation at the trade fair. The first-ever awards ceremony for the winners within the framework of the opening event underlines the importance of the südback Trend Award. The competition for apprentices and qualified young professionals is also reflected in the bakery trade and in different awards, which present on stage talented young professionals in the bakery trade or dedicated training companies. The Carlo Wildt Cup takes place this year for the 11th time. Here young professionals in the confectionery trade compete against each other and create sweet creations to fit in with the motto of "Weddings". The BakerMaker Award, which will be presented for the fourth time at südback, recognises the exceptional commitment of bakeries in the promotion of young professionals and successful concepts in the acquisition of apprentices. südback supports the award for the first time as a premium sponsor. In the Baking Star Contest it is all about the handicraft skills of apprentices and young baking talents. The announcement of the winners and the awards ceremony take place at südback.
