Wind energy: Fraunhofer to start research project

Within the framework of the innovation cluster “Power Electronics for Regenerative Energy Supply”, Fraunhofer IWES scientists in collaboration with 16 industrial companies are researching the causes and mechanisms of frequently occurring damage to power electronic components. The accessible database for this 4-year project contains measurements from 2,000 turbines.

The focal point of the project is wind energy turbine main converters.
Power electronics has become a key technology of the 21st Century. Power electronic components serve for example, the control of regenerative energy systems and enable the optimal use of the various renewable energy sources as also grid-compliant feeding of produced electricity into the public power supply grid. The focal point of this project is wind energy turbine main converters which are crucial for maintaining the required quality standards of electricity fed into the grid. Frequently occurring damage to these converters causes relevant repair costs and down-times, and with this, unnecessary increases in the power production costs of a wind energy turbine.

There are two lead projects in the Fraunhofer “Power Electronics for Regenerative Power Supply” Innovation Cluster: Lower Saxony Project “Reliable Power Electronics for Wind Energy Turbines” under the leadership of the Fraunhofer IWES and Schleswig-Holsteinische Project “New ConverterConcepts for Grid Feed-In of Electrical Energy up to 1700V, 1000A” under the leadership of the Fraunhofer ISIT. The aim of this project is to comprehend the, as yet not understood, causes and mechanisms of frequently occurring damage to WET power electronic components and using this knowledge to develop solutions for increasing reliability.
