Time and again, food contamination from materials such as plastics and glass leads to costly recall campaigns. Two research centres in Germany, the Fraunhofer Institutes IOSB and FHR, develop multi-sensor concepts to detect contaminants in products. The “FoodInSpector” sensor system is designed for the quality control of food.

GHM Gesellschaft für Handwerksmessen, organiser of the trade fair iba, has established a marketing cooperation with the Heidelberg-based trade fair organiser fairtrade and its trade fair iran food + bev tec. The Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology IPT in Aachen has expanded its machinery with a new system for the automated molding of high-precision optical glass components. As a result, the institute is now the only research institution in Europe able to offer research on efficient small-series production of small glass optics using a wafer-level approach. In February, the Estonian-based startup New Standard Oil successfully commissioned their first industrial-scale prototype for drying and torrefaction of biogenic feedstock operating with superheated steam at atmospheric pressure. The energy-efficient process was developed at the Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology IGB in Stuttgart, Germany, and produces valuable raw materials for the chemical and energy industries: basic chemicals, biocoal and water.
