Abstract submission for the forthcoming European Congress of Radiology (ECR 2017) still closed in October 2016, but with a record 6,757 abstracts submitted, representing a 22.8 per cent increase on the previous year’s figure and a new record, states the organizer. The new record includes abstracts submitted for both scientific papers for oral presentations, which increased by 18 per cent on last year, and electronic posters for the ECR’s EPOS exhibition, which saw 27 per cent more submissions. The boost in submissions for EPOS in particular is attributed to the success of the Voice of EPOS sessions introduced at ECR 2016, which give poster authors the opportunity to present their work in person at the congress.
Of special note are huge increases in submissions from Latin America, where the European Society of Radiology (ESR) has recently increased its engagement, including a commitment to reserve 100 places on its ECR 2017 Invest in the Youth programme for young applicants from the region. Due to the organizer, submissions from Argentina (+163%), Brazil (+154%), Mexico (+120%), Chile (+120%), and Colombia (+106%) all increased significantly, suggesting that the ESR’s efforts to connect with the Latin American imaging community are bearing fruit. Moreover, several traditional ECR abstract powerhouses also saw notable increases in submissions, such as Ireland (+59%), Italy (+49%), the UK (+33%) and China (+28%), showing that the appeal of playing a part in one of the world’s biggest medical imaging events is as high as ever.
