Prospects for the sector: GrindTec 2020 starts on 10 November

On 10 November 2020, GrindTec 2020, the leading industry forum for grinding technology, will start at the Augsburg Trade Fair Centre. As one of the first capital goods trade fairs after the lockdown in March, it is in the focus of the industry and the entire trade fair industry in Germany. As an international specialist trade fair for grinding technology, it brings together supply and demand almost congruently.

A coordinated safety and hygiene concept for precisely these current times, ensures that such an industry-specific meeting place is held in a professional and responsible manner. Field-tested standards of other industries, such as gastronomy and retail, merge here to form a coherent overall concept.

Grindtec 2020 is an impressive industry show. Around 500 companies - including leading manufacturers - will bring a comprehensive range of products and services with many innovations to Augsburg. It will thus offer the metalworking industry the important and necessary platform that many have been longing for. At the same time, it is also expected to provide the first impulses for a revival of sales. In fact, GrindTec has proved
time and again in the past that, as the leading trade fair, it can also act as a source of impulses for the grinding technology companies.

GrindTec 2020: Experience grinding technology trends live

On 50,000 m² the approximately 500 exhibitors will present a comprehensive range of products and services with numerous innovations. A preview of the range of products and services at GrindTec 2020 will be provided by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Wilfried Saxler, Managing Director of the Precision Toolmakers' Association FDPW: "As the leading trade fair for new technologies in grinding, honing, lapping and polishing,
the coming GrindTec will bring the sector together again after a long time. In the direct
dialogue between visitors and manufacturers, new perspectives for tool grinding will
open up, which can lead the companies out of the crisis.

Impulses are provided by highly functional solutions and further developments such as

  • hybrid grinding machine concepts that also integrate other manufacturing technologies

  • additiveely manufactured flow-optimized cooling lubricant nozzles

  • Direct drives in the grinding machine axes to improve dynamic stiffness and accuracyand to increase performance

  • new 5-axis machine concepts for tool grinding

  • Laser processing possibilities of diamond tools or diamond-coated tools.

The Corona crisis has clearly shown not only to the tool grinding industry that digitalization, networking and automation are indispensable. Currently, many new business models are emerging that have enormous economic potential. Creating added value in production technology at the same time in different places in the world is only possible with a modern network economy. The manufacturers of machines and peripheral systems, of process and tool technology have developed answers to these questions, which they will present live on site".

No GrindTec in 2020

Until the very end, GrindTec organiser AFAG Messen und Ausstellungen was in productive talks with the City of Augsburg in order to examine the effects of the new infection protection regulation on the implementation of GrindTec 2020. In Bavaria, additional corona restrictions will apply in the future from an incidence value of 100. Among other things, events with more than 50 participants, and thus also trade fairs, will then be prohibited. In the city of Augsburg, this incidence value has already been significantly exceeded for days. As a consequence, GrindTec is not feasible according to the current state of affairs, and according to the expert assessment of the authorities it is a mathematical impossibility that this situation will change by the time GrindTec is carried out. The trade fair organiser AFAG has formally applied for an exemption permit for this special trade fair, and this application was rejected. For these reasons, it is now clear that GrindTec 2020 is in fact impossible and prohibited. (more…)
