The innovations can be products, services or tech- nical innovations.” The special feature of the Fruit Lo- gistica Innovation Award is that it is selected by the more than 75,000 high-profile trade visitors from over 130 countries attending the exhibition. They are invited to cast their votes for the innovation of the year on the first two days of the trade fair, 7 and 8 February 2018. Two locations Ten nominated innovations will be pre- sented in special exhibits at two loca- tions, in the passageway between Halls 20 and 21 and in CityCube Berlin, Hall B. The winners will be announced at 14:30 h on 9 February 2018 in the pas- sageway between Halls 20 and 21. A panel of experts consisting of repre- sentatives from all levels of the fresh produce trade has nominated the fol- lowing ten innovations frommore than 70 submissions. A Spain company presents a firm, dark- brown Marmande tomato with an ex- ceptionally balanced intense sweet-sour taste and an excellent shelf life. Further- more, another Spain exhibitor offers a patented nursery and irrigation system for hydroponic plant breeding using ox- ygen enrichment to reduce water con- sumption by up to 80 per cent and en- ergy consumption by up to 25 per cent. With the “In-field Laboratory for Agri- cultural Testing”, a company from Israel shows a mobile technological solution for carrying out accurate real-time prac- tical tests on crops, soil and water over a period of minutes rather than days. Printing on fruit and vegetables A German exhibitor developed a pro- cess for printing on fruit and vegetables of any shape. Round objects can be ac- curately and individually printed with a neutral, water-resistant, high-contrast food colouring which is gentle on the product. An electromechanical system for the precise automatic peeling of all kinds of pitted and halved mangos with an average capacity of approximately 48 pieces per minute is presented by an Italian company. Furthermore, tasty natural crisps made from fresh co- conut with a unique taste will be shown, processed without oil or fat and available in Original Sea Salt, Mango Sea Salt and Choco- late Sea Salt varieties. Ecological packaging Ecological packaging material made of up to 50 per cent fresh grass fibre is another candidate at the Fruit Logistica Innovation Awards. The raw material base contributes to a sustainable re- duction in energy and water con- sumption. Smoothie vending machine A company from Belgium show- cases a smoothie vending machine that prepares 100 per cent natural smoothies from frozen fruits and vegetables based on the user’s own individual selection and recipe. Compostable bag Last but not least, two innovative solu- tions from the Netherlands are nomi- nated: A compostable bag containing a breeding medium for the predatory mite Amblyseius swirskii has been developed for the biological control of thrips. And a gift box made of untreated wood will be presented as well, containing a fresh wasabi rhizome and a wasabi rasp. This Dutch innovation is an additive-free um- ami adventure for the kitchen or dining table, the trade fair organiser Messe Berlin announced. Continued from page 1
