These robust systems are used to transmit sensor data and con- trol information across network infrastructures. In the age of the Internet of Things (IoT), people and things will be intelligently connected to one another, lead- ing to innovations in business and Industry 4.0. Miniaturised IoT system MIOTY ® , a miniaturised IoT sys- tem developed by Fraunhofer IIS, sets new standards in the field of wireless data transmission when it comes to cost efficiency, transmission range, transmission security and battery life. This so- lution relies on an asymmetrical transmission method that uses scores of simple sensor nodes and a complex receiver. A single receiver can handle a large num- ber of simultaneous and robust transmissions. MIOTY ® boasts a transmission range of up to 15 kil- ometres and the energy-efficient operation results in a battery life of up to 20 years. MIOTY ® can be deployed for a wide range of applications. The technology is suitable for moni- toring large technical systems or difficult-to-access areas and can serve as the underlying transmis- sion infrastructure for applica- tions such as switching statuses, machine-to machine (M2M) com- munication, smart meters (re- mote meter readings and remote consumer control) and other sys- tems. Even sports and security ap- plications require data transmis- sion involving numerous sensors. Wireless data transmission data sensors from Fraunhofer IIS can be used to send vital signs data from athletes or first responders. In addition, sensors for capturing ambient information such as hu- midity, motion, light, temperature or pressure can be integrated into the MIOTY ® technology to sup- port specific applications. With its broad utility and special technical features, MIOTY ® serves as the foundation for developing Industry 4.0 and IoT applications at Fraunhofer IIS. MIOTY ® uses an efficient channel encoding scheme that increases its range by a factor of ten over standard 868 MHz wireless systems.
