imm cologne 2017

•••4••• Messewelten T he kitchen, long considered far more than simply a place to eat, has become the focal point for communication and self-expression in today ’ s homes. Where until recently neutral, soft colours and unobtrusive materials were called for, a trend can now be seen towards personalisation with a variety of materials and new colours. Inspiration for this is supplied by the trade fair Living- Kitchen in Cologne, which, along- side imm cologne 2017, will once again attract many visitors. Where you previously had to choose between a modern, clean look and a cosy, rustic style, there is now an infinite range of options in between – even for solid wood kitchens. And these options can be combined: wood with metal or stone, dark, high-grade woods with glass and stainless steel, smooth white drawer and door fronts with open shelving units in warmwood tones. In those places where materials are combined, a bold colour choice is made or where there are inconsistencies in terms of the shape or height of kitchen furniture, or where it is built around a corner, counter- tops and repeated colours link it all together to form a comprehen- sive whole. This way, the dining table can be given prominence over the island unit or the work surface and thrust into the space, while still being directly identi- fied with the kitchen through the choice of colour or material: a stand-alone piece of furniture, yet one which is not isolated. Countertops are immediately vis- ible and create elegant transitions between different areas like cook- ing, refrigeration, washing-up and eating. As the connecting fea- tures, they attest to carefully con- sidered architectural solutions. Today, many different materials are available, including natural materials such as marble, slate or wood, composite materials con- taining ceramic, acrylic and con- crete, as well as laminates imitat- ing natural materials. The fashion for individual looks is also playing a major role in surfac- es. In their interpretation of the very popular metallic effect, some manufacturers’ range include an unusual rust look. Others offer slate as a surface, a material that offers the practical feature that it can be used for shopping lists and children‘s art written or drawn in chalk – for the needs and art of the moment. Metallic surfaces For their appearance at Living- Kitchen, industry professionals will not only be highlighting the multidimensionality of their pro- ducts, which can be accessed from all sides, but also unorthodox sur- face effects that currently appear to be dominated by metal and metal-look finishes. And famous brands are also driving the trend towards individualised, homely kitchens with innovative designs and surfaces in bronze, and urban- look graffiti print or the industrial chic of perforated sheet metal el- ements. Metallic-looking surfaces, for example, create completely different contrasts, depending on how the light falls on them. They are reminiscent of oxidised steel surfaces that underscore the cur- rent design trend of surfaces and metal structures that are pleasant to the touch. And even the inner workings of the new kitchen are more individ- ual and colourful. The trendy com- bination of white and wood, with echoes of Scandinavian simplicity, is unveiled only once the wooden doors are opened to reveal their interiors. And the range of colours is growing for kitchen appliances, too. For example, from 2017, an ingenious extractor hood will be available from a domestic appli- ances company for its new angled, flat, or box-shaped wall-mounted extractor units, which will not on- ly introduce colour (black, green or orange) to the kitchen, but al- so customisable lighting. Firstly, cookbooks can be rested on the wall-mounted unit and pictures or postcards can be attached to it using magnets – the surface can even be written on. Secondly, au- tomatic adjustments can be made to the operation of the extractor hood and hob over WLAN, and, with 31 different colour levels, the AmbientLight function makes it possible to select a suitable colour for every setting. High-gloss or matt finish – grey is a popular base colour in interior design.
