••• 10••• Innovationen Sustainable brewing with metal fuel Student innovation has been installed in rst brewery E arlier this year Swinkels Family Brewers (formerly Bavaria NV) started using metal powder as a sustainable fuel to produce steam for their brewing process. The system in place has been de- signed by students and research- ers from Eindhoven University of Technology (Team SOLID). Clean energy thanks to metal powder It makes practical use of the en- ergy that is released during the burning of metal, thereby tack- ling two major societal problems: storing energy and avoidingCO 2 emissions. Just like material that consists of carbon (such as oil and coal), metal powder contains energy and can be burned. The residual product is not carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), but metal oxide (in this case rust powder). The ener- gy that is released can be used to generate steam, which in turn can drive steam turbines for electric- ity or power industrial processes. This is a circular process, because the rust powder is easy to capture and can be ‘regenerated’ into clean metal powder. Following research into metal combustion in the research group of Philip de Goey, TU/e professor of combustion technology, an honors project was set up in 2016 for two applied physics students and one mechanical engineer- ing student. The project focused on the heat generated by burn- ing iron powder above a tea light candle. The following year, 19 students started developing the proof-of-concept, with a small en- ergy installation running on iron powder, which started operat- ing last year with the capacity of an average central heating boiler. The installation that has been in- stalled at Swinkels Family Brewers supplies steam to Bavaria’s steam grid and generate 100 kW, the equivalent of five household boil- ers. The aim of this project is to demonstrate the potential of the installation, with a view to further research into the technology. Swinkels Family Brewers wants to use this sustainable innovative technology to make their brewing process less dependent on fossil fuels. With the subsidy project of the province of Noord-Brabant and cooperation with seven compa- nies, two foundations and TU Eind- hoven, the student team wants to show that its technology is a fully- fledged alternative for systems that are still running on gas. “I am not entirely sure how the systems works,” admit Swinkels CEO, Jan-Reinier Swinkels. “But we need energy for our processes and we are always trying to imple- ment new and sustainable solu- tions. I am very proud that we are using the system in our brewery.” The choice of iron as an energy carrier has several advantages compared to other renewable energies. It is abundantly avail- able on earth, cheap, and it has a high energy density. It is very suit- able for transport, and retains the stored energy almost permanent- ly. In einer breit ange- legten Studie hat das Marktfor- schungsunternehmen Mintel die wichtigsten Trends für Teegeträn- ke ermittelt. Wer sich von zucker- haltigen Getränken oder gar Alko- hol abwenden will, der konsumiert laut Mintel eher Teegetränke mit kräftigen Aromen. Dazu zählt bei- spielsweise die aromatisierte Sor- te Green Hills Rum und Honig aus Polen, ein Rooibos-Tee mit Rum- und Honiggeschmack, der frei von Alkohol und angereichert mit ei- ner Mischung aus Zimt, Apfel, Süß- holz und Sternanis ist. Außerdem sieht das Marktforschungsunter- nehmen einen Trend hin zur Kom- bination von Tee- und Gemüsege- nuss, den es thematisch unter „vegetarischer Revolution“ zu- sammenfasst. Beispiel hierfür ist das spanische Produkt Pompa- dour Gemüse Mix Infusión de Ver- duras Relax, das Tomate mit Hage- butte, Apfel, Zwiebel, Basilikum, Zimt und Passionsblume kombi- niert. Zeit zum Entspannen – ein weiterer Oberbegriff, der für Tee- genuss 2019 stehen soll. Hier sieht Mintel Fabindia Organics Bio Tulsi Honig Kamilletee aus Indien bei- spielgebend. Bei diesem Produkt steht nicht nur Kamille für ent- spannende Eigenschaften. Auch Basilikum (Tulsi) als Teil der traditi- onellen ayurvedischen Medizin gilt als stresslösend. Ebenso prognostiziert der Markt- forscher einen Run in Richtung Kraft-Tees, die natürliche funkti- onelle Inhaltsstoffe mit zusätzli- chen Nährstoffen kombinieren. Tee gibt es in vielen Variationen.
