LABVOLUTION 2017

Conference 3D-Printing in Science One of the highlights for profession- als attending the show this year is the “3D-Printing in Science”, a two-day conference that will run alongside Labvolution. 3D-Printing has proven itself to be the best solution when it comes to rapid, ad hoc modification and manufacturing of tools and medi- cal instruments. More and more sci- ence institutions, ranging in size from small labs right up to NASA-scale, are using this technology to explore new areas of research and streamline work processes. The 3D-Printing in Science confer- ence which will be held on 16 and 17 May in the conference area of Hall 19/20 will explore the many advan- tages of 3D-Printing in prosthetics manufacturing, laboratory supplies and the production of bio-materials for tissue cultivation in medical and non-medical applications. What’s the impact of big data? Inspirational keynotes in the evening of day one of the show H ow to breathe life into new innova- tions in Europe? And what will be the impact of “big data” on personal- ized therapy and preventive medicine? Those are the kind of questions at the focus of the official even- ing reception for the “Labvolu- tion with Biotechnica” exhibition. Two keynotes and a get-together in a relaxed atmosphere will bring together some 300 invited guests from government, business and research on the night of the first day of the show. About the virtual self The evening programme – held in the New York facility room in the conference area of the new exhi- bition hall – will be kicked off by words of welcome from the host, Dr. Andreas Gruchow, a member of the Deutsche Messe Managing Board, as well as from a high-rank- ing representative of the German state of Lower Saxony, Daniela Behrens, Undersecretary in the Lower Saxony Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labour and Transport. These short in- troductions will be followed by two key- notes, before going over to the informal part of the event. Dr. Hans Lehrach, Di- rector and research fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics, will speak on the topic of “Making una- voidable mistakes in-silico: the virtual self as the basis of truly personalized therapy and prevention”. Dr. Lehrach is Director of the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Genetics as well as founder and steering committee chairperson for Alacris Theranostics, plus Scientific Di- rector of the Dahlem Center for Genome Research and Medical System Biology. “The European Style – How to Bring In- novations to Life?” That is the topic of the second keynote by Dr. Ingmar Hoerr, CEO and President of a biopharmaceuti- cal company which itself has al- ready amply demonstrated how innovations can be brought to life. Back in 2000, Dr. Hoerr teamed up with other colleagues to found the company in the German town of Tübingen. The inspiration for this was his discovery during his doc- toral candidacy of the surprising properties of the mRNA class of molecules. Contrary to conventional wisdom, this molecular class has proved ca- pable of creating a highly specific immune response. Based on this significant discovery, Hoerr and his colleagues set up a company which is now a world leader in the re- search and development of mRNA- based active ingredients. Since its founding, the company has at- tracted some 355 million euros of capital investment. Hoerr has also served on the Baden-Württemberg Council for Innovation and Competitiveness and is currently advising the EU Commission as a member of the “High Level Group of In- novators”, dedicated to creating a Euro- pean Council for Innovation. A get-together in a relaxed atmosphere and two keynotes will bring together some 300 invited guests from govern- ment, business and research on the night of the first day of the show.
