New flame retardants Non-toxic additive provides re protection for wood Together with an industry part- ner, specialists of the Swiss re- search institute Empa (Eidgenös- sische Materialprüfungs- und Forschungsanstalt) have devel- oped a new flame retardant for wood and wood-based materials. The colourless additive, which can be easily mixed with coatings and cellulose materials, opens up new applications for wood processing companies. Read more on page 6 Eco-friendly steel coatings EHLA process: extremely fast and very economical technology For the development of the Extreme High- speed Laser Material Deposition (EHLA) process, researchers from Fraunhofer ILT in Aachen were honoured with the 2nd Prize of the Steel Innovation Award in the “Steel in Research and Development” category. The EHLA process has recently led to a re- think in the surface engineering industry concerning the use of coatings based on controversial chromium(VI) compounds. EHLA melts metal powder particles directly in the laser beam and boosts the process speed from the current maximum of sever- al metres a minute to speeds as high as 500 metres a minute. And as well as being ex- tremely fast, EHLA also scores highly for its very economical use of materials. The Fraunhofer ILT team took 2nd place at the Steel Innovation Awards in Berlin in the “Steel in Research and Development” category for their EHLA process.
