CEBIT 2018

•••8••• Messewelten How hackers work CEBIT puts spotlight on IT security and data security W ith hacker attacks and cy- bercrime making the news with almost the same monoto- nous regularity as weather re- ports, robust IT and data security are essential in all areas of life, whether you’re in government, business or at home. Security is certain to become even more mis- sion-critical in the year to come, and will therefore feature as one of the keynote themes at CEBIT. CEBIT’s IT Security display will be even bigger in 2018, occupying two halls (12 and 13) for the first time. As well as an exhibition zone, it will feature several speaking stag- es where, every day of the show, experts will discuss key issues in IT security from multiple perspec- tives, ranging from hands-on prac- tical to out-of-the-box visionary. The Expert Stages in halls 12 and 13 have a diverse programme that includes security showcases and presentations on individual securi- ty technologies. The topics and is- sues up for discussion here include IT security for fintech companies and the security implications of IoT and AI. Among the highlights will be a series of lectures on employ- ee awareness of security issues in relation to the use of company data and devices. These lectures are designed to provide practical information that visitors can use to improve their IT security. One of the big-name speakers on stage will be the penetration tester and IT security expert Se- bastian Schreiber, who will report on how hackers work and how he, as a white-hat hacker, goes about exposing security vulnerabilities. Schreiber’s vision of the future is not altogether reassuring: “The more we use IT systems, the more we become dependent on them. Eventually our planet will be run by an almighty IT system – which will be open to manipulation and abuse by hackers from around the world.” Meanwhile, the focus on Center Stage in Hall 12 will be on new and emerging online threats. Among much else, the discussion here will focus on Europe’s cyberse- curity strategy and the growing significance of IT security. One of the best-known speakers on Cent- er Stage will be Finnish IT security expert Mikko Hypponen. He will be reporting on potential cyber- attack scenarios and how to safe- guard against them. VDE Tec Summit: New flagship event for digital technology CEBIT features the first-ever VDE Tec Summit: The two-day event will be held on the Thursday and Fri- day of CEBIT, and it will fill the on-site Convention Center (CC) to capacity. The summit will consist of two main events: “Tec Innovation Tank” and “Tec Meets Science”. Together these events will cover everything of importance to digital technology to- day. “Tec Innovation Tank” is all about future-defin- ing technologies and is targeted at students and young professionals, such as those represented by the VDE Young Net organization. Meanwhile, the dia- logue at “Tec Meets Science” will focus on intelligent automation, Artificial Intelligence, mixed reality, the future of ICT, smart data and cyber security. The sum- mit will be held at the Convention Center (CC). Experts develop secure data spaces for lawyers and SMEs The exchange of informa- tion between lawyers and clients is protected by law. Whenever unen- crypted e-mails are sent, however, this protection is undermined. And even with encryption in place, it is still possible to draw conclusions about who is communicating with whom, which should also be confidential, of course. Christoph Sorge, Juris Endowed Professor for Legal Informatics at the Saarland University, has been examining the matter. His team recently developed a web-based software system that protects the communication of lawyers and enterprises from third parties. The Saarbrücken researchers will be presenting their software, “Ma- vora”, at CEBIT in Hall 27, Stand G75.
