•••6••• Innovationen Neues Zentrum für Brautechnologie Die Hochschule Weihenste - phan-Triesdorf baut: Bis zum Herbst 2021 soll auf dem Gelände am Staudengarten ein Zentrum für angewandte Brau- und Getränke- technologie entstehen. Das Zent- rum wird ein Brautechnikum um- fassen mit (brau-)technischen Anlagen zum Herstellen von Ge- tränken bis hin zu deren steriler Abfüllung, Laborflächen für che- misch-technische Analysen und Mi- krobiologie sowie einem Raum für Sensorik. Daneben wird es auf den knapp 1 360 Quadratmetern Ge- samtnutzfläche einen Seminar- raum und Büros geben. Der Spa- tenstich für den Neubau ist erfolgt. Sustainably brewed beer could pay off More and more breweries are in- vesting in practices to save energy and reduce greenhouse gases. Will it pay off? A study by Indiana Uni- versity researchers suggests it may. Drawing on survey research, they find that a majority of U.S. beer drinkers would be willing to pay more for beer produced with sus- tainable practices. On average, they would pay about $1.30 more per six-pack. “The takeaway for the brewing industry is that it is financially feasible to introduce energy-saving practices into the brewing process,” said Sanya Car- ley, associate professor in the IU Bloomington School of Public and Environmental Affairs and the first author of the paper. Following collaboration between the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and a partner, the first Finnish consumer goods to see the introduction of sensors and func- tional inks in the form of addition- al information, product safety and entertainment will be launched by the end of this year. Traceability and solutions provid- ing entertainment will soon be part of our daily lives, particularly in food casings and domestic ap- pliances. “For example, a smart sensor attached to a beer bottle label knows if the beer is fit for consumption, its brewer, and the cir- cumstances under which it was brewed. The codes in the label also inform the reader of how the life span of the prod- uct can be improved and offer a direct communication channel between the consumer and the manufacturer,” says Liisa Hakola, project manager at VTT. Scheduled to end at the end of 2018, this project is part of the Eu- ropean TagItSmart project under which VTT has developed func- tional inks for products’ changing smart codes. An industry partner from Finland is also participating in the project; 2D codes individu- alised by them have now been at- tached to the labels of Bock bot- tles, from a small Vaasa brewery.
