Resorbable pacing leads

A team of researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Advanced Materials IFAM in Dresden is developing resorbable pacing leads that can significantly reduce risk factors after cardiac surgery. In collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine Carl Gustav Carus – TU Dresden, the institute’s researchers are adopting this novel approach in the project “Resorbable Molybdenum Temporary Cardiac Electrodes,” or “ReMoTe CarE” for short. The joint Fraunhofer booth in Hall 8a, Booth G10 will showcase the very first demonstrators.

After the postoperative monitoring period, which lasts a few days, the resorbable pacing leads can remain in the body, where they slowly degrade
Postoperative cardiac arrhythmias are common after cardiac surgery. They are routinely treated with external pacemakers and temporary pacing leads that are prophylactically implanted at the time of surgery. This is inherently associated with several risks: Manually extracting modern stainless steel pacing leads can result in complications as the wires can, in some cases, resist extraction due to tissue in-growth. However, if the leads are cut and left in the body, there is the risk of infection and migration; in the case of the latter, revision surgery may be required.

In the ReMoTe CarE project, which is funded by the Else Kröner Fresenius Center for Digital Health in Dresden, researchers are investigating a completely new approach: In the future, bioresorbable leads that can be left in the body and then disappear by resorption after a defined period are expected to replace conventional leads. This approach is based on the use of the metal molybdenum (Mo), which offers several advantages. “Molybdenum degrades uniformly in the body, is biocompatible, and has high mechanical strength and electrical conductivity,” explains Dr. Georg Pöhle, scientist at Fraunhofer IFAM in Dresden. For use in bioresorbable pacing leads, it is coated with resorbable biopolymers to electrically insulate the surrounding tissue.

Fraunhofer IFAM is testing and optimizing the mechanical, electrical and degradation properties of the materials used. The institute is also responsible for manufacturing the demonstrators – strands of fine metal wires that are coated with biopolymers. The demonstrators will be tested in preclinical studies at the Faculty of Medicine at TU Dresden later this year.

The objective is to avoid the complications associated with non-resorbable pacing leads. This would not only provide great relief to patients but also significantly relieve the burden on both healthcare professionals and the healthcare system. Fraunhofer researchers will present the first demonstrators of the resorbable pacing leads at the joint Fraunhofer booth in Hall 8a, Booth G10.

Fraunhofer IFAM in Dresden specializes in developments in the field of medical engineering. The institute also focuses on the mobility and energy technology fields of business.

MEDICA and COMPAMED 2020 to be launched as ‘virtual.MEDICA’ and ‘virtual.COMPAMED’

MEDICA 2020 and COMPAMED 2020, the world-leading information and communication platforms for the medical technology industry and supplier industry for the medical technology industry, will take place entirely online from 16 to 19 November. Within the framework of 'virtual.MEDICA' and 'virtual.COMPAMED', decision-makers from all sectors of the healthcare industry can then expect a comprehensive range of products and services at virtual.MEDICA.de and virtual.COMPAMED.de consisting of three focal areas: The Conference Area (conference and forum program), the Exhibition Space (for exhibitors and product innovations) and the Networking Plaza (networking/ matchmaking). The next events, MEDICA 2021 and COMPAMED 2021, will be held as a hybrid event next year. The hybrid concept consists of combining live platforms for professional visitors to the Düsseldorf trade fair centre and digital offers. (more…)

Start-ups launch at MEDICA

The MEDICA, the world’s leading medical trade fair held in Düsseldorf, was one of the very first events across all industries to offer young companies in their founding phase special programme formats to present their concepts many years ago. It has subsequently become the international number one for health start-ups too. The creative and predominantly digitally driven start-up scene will be the centre of attention once again at MEDICA 2020 (run time: 16 to 19 November). This is because, following the Corona pandemic, mobile and easily applicable solutions for linking the actors in the healthcare system have become even more important. (more…)

MEDICA + COMPAMED 2020: The Coronavirus has grabbed the world’s attention and increased the focus on good healthcare and modern equipment

Globally, no sector has been placed under the magnifying glass more than the healthcare sector due to the Corona pandemic. Hospitals, outpatient clinics, practice-based physicians and care facilities have experienced a sudden increased demand for medical and laboratory technology, a wide variety of medical products, digital health applications and, most of all, personal protective equipment. Under these conditions, the plans for the world’s biggest medical trade fair MEDICA 2020 and the number one trade fair for suppliers of the medical technology industry, COMPAMED 2020, held in parallel, are revving up to full throttle. Both events will take place from 16 to 19 November in Düsseldorf – closely interlinked with extensive digital offers and services. (more…)
