For their 2018 models, manufacturers have focused on technology and the American family. “There is new technology being deployed across a wider range of cars,” says Institute for Highway Safety Senior Analyst Stephanie Brinley. “There are cars that can communicate with the home, and the car is increasingly a part of the Internet of Things. The pace of integration has been rapid.” Connectivity exists between vehicles and infrastructure, as cameras and sensors work to help the driver stay aware of surroundings and help the vehicle avoid collisions. Connectivity also exists between vehicles and smart devices. Onboard Wi-Fi and app-based vehicle monitoring are more and more common, turning the vehicle into a hotspot while helping passengers connect to the world.
Many 2018 models have been designed specifically for the American market, even those from foreign manufacturers. A Japanese manufacturer also took a cue from American consumers with its newly redesigned car, which has reconfigured seating for greater accessibility for growing families, plus better tech features to appeal more to Millennial buyers. It has an embedded camera and dashboard video display, allowing parents to observe backseat behavior. CabinTalk lets both front- and rear-seat occupants communicate back and forth without having to shout.
