Ac- cording to the preliminary figures published by the Research De- partment of Ucima (Italian Auto- matic Packaging Machinery Ma- nufacturers’ Association), the sector’s year-end turnover was expected to reach 7.045 billion eu- ros, 6.7 per cent up on 2016. Ex- ports continue to drive the sector with international sales of 5.6 billi- on euros in 2017, 6.3 per cent up on the previous year and an 80 per cent share of total turnover. According to the latest disaggre- gated data available for the first eight months of 2017, all geogra- phical areas have seen strong per- formances. The only exception is the African continent which has experienced an overall 6.2 per cent decline. In detail, the best- performing area is non-EU Europe at +14.6 per cent, with 25 per cent growth in the Russian Federation but a two percentage point de- cline in Turkey. Next comes Cen- tral and South America (+17.7 per cent), with 33.6 per cent growth in Mexico and a turnaround in Brazil with +17 per cent. In third position is North America with +12.1 per cent.
