According to initial estimates by VDMA economists, sales of ma- chinery and equipment (excluding services) in Europe rose by six per cent to 777 billion euros. Europe thus also clearly outper- formed the global machinery mar- ket, whose total sales – after a de- cline of one per cent in 2016 – now rose slightly by one per cent to 2.6 trillion euros. “In 2017, invest- ment in industry finally picked up, especially in the EU countries. The economy on the European market has noticeably gained momentum over the past year, and the up- swing in mechanical engineering is likely to continue in 2018,” VDMA chief economist Dr. Ralph Wiech- ers assesses the development. Last year, Germany maintained its position as the world’s third- largest machine producer, which it has held since 2013. For 2017, the sales volume is estimated at 274 billion euros (plus five per cent over the previous year). China re- mained by far the world’s largest machine manufacturer in 2017 – a position that the People’s Repub- lic has held since 2009. Total sales of 910 billion euros corresponded to a decline of almost six per cent compared with the previous year. Measured in national currency (renminbi), however, this decline was smaller (minus two per cent). As in previous years, the United States followed in second place in the global country ranking. Sales here are expected to increase by three per cent to 326 billion euros. Global machinery market: Europe’s sales rose by one per cent to 2.6 trillion euros.
