Hannover Messe 2017

•••22••• Messewelten T hanks to their excellent prop- erties – above all in combina- tion with additive manufacturing techniques – ceramic materials have become important “prob- lem-solvers” in the mechanical and plant engineering sectors, industrial manufacturing and ma- terials science. The latest devel- opments will be on show at this year’s Industrial Supply. Ceramics offer key benefits on ac- count of their extreme hardness, dimensional stability and wear resistance. They are the ideal so- lution for highly loaded compo- nents – for example, in machining and metal-forming applications. Advanced ceramic materials are also used for test plugs in the ap- paratus industry, and for small- component grippers in electron- ics manufacturing. High-performance ceramic ma- terials are now widely deployed in mainstream sectors such as the automotive industry (e.g. in welding applications), the food industry (e.g. in complex produc- tion and bottling plants), medical technology, energy technology, electronics/electrical engineering, aerospace and many other fields. Ceramic radial pump impeller This spectrum ranges from minis- cule components to large-sized modules. In 2017 the Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems (IKTS) will be pre- senting a ceramic radial pump im- peller which has been developed and tested in collaboration with an industry partner. This compo- nent, with its widely varying wall thickness and complex under- cuts, convincingly demonstrates the great potential of high-per- formance ceramics. Featuring twelve member companies, the Think Ceramics pavilion by the German Ceramics Industry Asso- ciation (VKI) will cover a complete range of materials: silicate ceram- ics (e.g. steatite and cordierite); oxide ceramics (e.g. aluminum ox- ide, zirconium oxide, magnesium oxide, silicon oxide); and non-ox- ide ceramics (e.g. silicon carbide). The focus will also be on practical applications in electronics, electri- cal engineering, mechanical engi- neering and process engineering. The Applied Ceramics pavilion will once again bring together researchers, customers and sup- pliers. Here as well, the emphasis will be on the huge variety of pos- sible uses for industrial ceramics. Industrial Supply, the trade fair for innovative subcontracting solutions and lightweight construc- tion, will set the spotlight on the latest developments in engineering ceramics.
