EUROBIKE 2018
••• 10••• Messewelten Cargo bikes are the new focus at Eurobike Government and municipalities give the industry a powerful “push” forward offering incentives F reight-bearing bicycles or car- go bikes are a real hit in the bicycle market. Market observers report significant growth in this segment. In addition to innova- tions in design and technology, there are also various funding programms from the federal and state governments and munici- palities. With the new cargo area, Eurobike will be presenting the trending topic for the first time in Rothaus Hall A1, which is reserved for e-mobility solutions. Cargo bikes have long since been transformed from an insider tip in the eco-niche to an urban trend- setter. More and more families appreciate the practical bicycles with a cargo bed as a stylish sec- ond “car” or even a replacement for a first car. Logistics companies in turn are discovering cargo bikes more and more as an ingenious solution for the difficult last mile in urban environments. Market sources state that the sales volume last year was ap- proximately twice as high as in 2016. The 2018 trend points to a further increase: According to the latest edition of the “Bicycle Monitor”, a survey commissioned by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastruc- ture, some seven per cent of Ger- mans can imagine purchasing a cargo bike as their next bike. In recent years cargo bikes have picked up speed, not least thanks to electric drives that can be used to effortlessly carry a heavy pay- load, such as a family’s weekly groceries. The smart design of many cargo bike models and tech- nical innovations are also impor- tant sales impulses, but there are very specific financial incentives for cargo bike buyers in many localities. In Munich, for exam- ple, the purchase of commer- cially and privately used e-cargo bikes is awarded with an incen- tive amounting to 25 per cent of the price, paid from city coffers. Baden-Württemberg in turn subsi- dizes the purchase of cargo bikes with an electric motor with up to 4,000 euros when the vehicles are used commercially. This model is catching on: the Transport Com- mittee of Germany’s Bundestag is currently discussing whether there should be a purchase bo- nus nationwide for cargo bikes used commercially. An overview of the grant programms currently offered in Germany can be found on the internet portal www.car- gobike.jetzt. Cargo bikes are versatile vehicles for different purposes.
